In a world that often promotes self-will and rebellion, the Bible remains steadfast in its teaching on the need to respect authority. Whether it is parents, elders, government officials, employers, or spiritual leaders, honouring those in positions of leadership aligns us with God’s divine order.

Biblical Basis for Respecting Authority
Respect for Parents
The Bible is clear about the honour due to parents:
“Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, ESV)
This commandment comes with a promise of long life and blessings for those who obey.
Obedience to Government and Leaders
Government and rulers exist by God’s appointment, and we are called to obey them as long as their laws do not contradict God's Word. This was clearly explained in the Bible.
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1, ESV)
Honouring Employers and Colleagues
The workplace is another environment where respect for authority is necessary. Paul instructs: “Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5, ESV)
This means that our attitude toward our employers and colleagues should reflect Christlike humility.
Reverence for Elders and Spiritual Leaders
Elders, both in the community and within the church, deserve honour.
“Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers.” (1 Timothy 5:1, ESV). Likewise, spiritual leaders are to be respected. The Bible says. “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls.” (Hebrews 13:17, ESV)
Glorifying God Through Respect
Respecting authority is ultimately an act of worship and obedience to God. When we submit to those He has placed over us, we acknowledge His sovereignty. Even when human leaders fail, our response should still reflect Christ’s humility and love.
A Short Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. Help us to respect and honour the authorities You have placed in our lives, knowing that in doing so, we bring glory to Your name. Teach us humility, patience, and obedience, that we may reflect Your character in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
